Hiring freelance marketers: SEO, content, paid and social
July 17, 2026 · 3 min read · HireCurated team
Marketing covers many specialties, and the best freelancers usually focus on one or two. A brilliant SEO specialist is rarely also a brilliant paid ads expert. Hiring "a marketer" without a clear goal often leads to scattered activity and disappointing results.
Start with your goal, then hire the specialist who moves it.
Match the marketer to the goal
More organic traffic
Hire an SEO specialist and a content writer. SEO fixes technical issues, finds the keywords your customers search for and builds a plan. Content writers create the articles and pages that rank. Results compound over time but usually take months.
Leads or sales quickly
Hire a performance marketer to run paid search and social ads. Paid campaigns can produce results within weeks, but stop when the budget stops.
Brand awareness and community
Hire a social media manager to build an audience, create content and engage with your community.
An overall plan
Hire a digital marketer who can build a strategy, choose channels and coordinate specialists.
What to look for
- Results with context. Not just "grew traffic by 300%", but from what starting point, in what market, over what time and with what budget.
- Relevant experience. B2B SaaS marketing differs a lot from e-commerce or local services. The channels, sales cycles and messages are different.
- Analytics skills. Every good marketer should be comfortable with tracking, attribution and reporting.
- Honesty about timelines. Be wary of anyone promising first-page rankings in weeks or guaranteed results.
- Strategic thinking. The ability to explain why a channel fits your audience, not just how to run it.
How to evaluate
Ask for a short audit
Ask candidates for a brief audit of your website, ad account or social presence: three things they would change and why. It shows how they think and gives you useful ideas even if you do not hire them. Keep it short, or pay for it.
Discuss a past campaign in depth
- What was the goal, and how was it measured?
- What did they try that did not work?
- What did they learn about the audience?
- What would they do differently?
Check their own marketing
A marketer's own website, profile and content are a portfolio. It is not everything, but it says something.
Set clear goals and reporting
Agree on metrics before work begins:
- SEO: organic traffic, rankings for priority keywords, sign-ups or leads from organic search
- Content: traffic, time on page, conversions from content
- Paid: cost per lead or acquisition, return on ad spend, conversion rates
- Social: reach, engagement, followers, traffic to the website
Ask for a short weekly or monthly report: results, what was learned and what is next.
Give them what they need
- Access to analytics, ad accounts, your CMS and social accounts
- Brand guidelines and examples of content you like
- Information about customers: who they are, what they care about, common objections
- Someone who can approve content quickly
Slow approvals kill marketing momentum. A post that takes three weeks to approve is often outdated by the time it goes live.
Budget for both people and media
For paid campaigns, budget separately for the freelancer and the ad spend. A great performance marketer with no budget to test cannot show results. Start with enough budget to learn, then scale what works.
Common mistakes
- Hiring one person to do every channel
- Judging SEO after one month
- No tracking set up, so results cannot be measured
- Changing direction every few weeks
- Treating marketing as separate from product and sales
